Arita Ware Imaizumi Imaemon XIV
or over 370 years, Imaemon has been recognized as one of the finest porcelain traditions in Japan, representing the pinnacle of Japanese ceramic artistry. The current head of the Imaemon family, Imaizumi Imaemon XIV, was designated as a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property) in 2014.
Imaemon is renowned for developing the “Sumi Hajiki” technique, in which patterns are first drawn in ink and then coated with underglaze blue. During firing, the ink burns away, leaving the motifs in a delicate, pure white that contrasts beautifully against the blue. The result is a quietly elegant expression of refined craftsmanship and serene beauty.
