Buzan Fukushima
The Leading Master of Akae-Saibyo — A Mesmerizing World of Fine Crimson Lines
Akae-Saibyo is an extraordinary decorative technique in which intricate patterns and images are drawn using ultra-fine lines in bengara red pigment. Within the long history of Kutani ware, this technique—once nearly lost—was revived by Buzan Fukushima, who brought new life to the tradition of Sano Akae.
Through the delicate interplay of line thickness and precision, his works achieve remarkable depth and brilliance, radiating richness and refinement even though they are painted in a single color: red. Each piece captivates the viewer with its exquisite harmony and vitality.
Today, Fukushima’s creations enjoy immense popularity in Japan and are highly acclaimed around the world. He has also trained many disciples, who continue to carry on and expand the legacy of Akae-Saibyo through their own celebrated works.
