Shishimai – Japanese Lion Dance
Shishimai is a traditional Japanese lion dance performed at festivals, New Year celebrations, and other special occasions. The lion is believed to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck, health, and happiness.
In Japan, there is also a tradition in which the lion playfully “bites” a person’s head. This is considered a blessing and is believed to ward off misfortune and bring good health and fortune.
With its long history and auspicious meaning, Shishimai is a familiar symbol of protection, prosperity, and good fortune in Japanese culture. Shishimai-themed ornaments are therefore also appreciated as decorative lucky charms and meaningful gifts.
