What is Daruma?
A Daruma is a traditional Japanese good-luck figure that symbolizes perseverance, success, and the achievement of goals. Its rounded shape is designed to return upright when tipped over, representing the Japanese spirit of “fall down seven times, stand up eight” — never giving up despite difficulties.
Daruma are commonly associated with setting goals and making wishes. Traditionally, a Daruma is made with blank eyes. When making a wish or setting a goal, one eye is filled in. The second eye is added when the goal has been achieved.
Today, Daruma are popular not only as symbols of good fortune in Japan, but also as decorative objects and meaningful gifts. They are often given to celebrate new beginnings, business success, examinations, achievements, and other important milestones.
