What Is a Sakazuki?
A sakazuki is a traditional Japanese sake cup distinguished by its wide, shallow shape. It has been used in Japan for centuries during ceremonies, celebrations, and formal occasions, including weddings, New Year festivities, and other important cultural events.
Unlike a guinomi or an ochoko, a sakazuki is designed to be sipped slowly, allowing the drinker to appreciate the aroma, flavor, and presentation of the sake. Its elegant form also symbolizes respect, harmony, and hospitality in Japanese culture.
Today, sakazuki cups are crafted in a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, lacquerware, and glass. Beautifully decorated examples, such as Kutani ware sakazuki, are treasured not only for enjoying sake but also as collectible works of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
