Sometsuke is a traditional Japanese blue-and-white porcelain decorating technique in which designs are hand-painted with cobalt pigment (gosu) on white porcelain before being fired at high temperatures.
Best known in Arita Ware, Sometsuke has been practiced for more than 400 years. Its crisp white porcelain and deep indigo-blue designs create a timeless elegance that is admired around the world.
Because the cobalt pigment fuses with the porcelain during firing, the decoration becomes highly durable and resistant to fading. From landscapes and flowers to birds and auspicious motifs, each design is carefully painted by skilled artisans, making every piece a refined expression of Japanese craftsmanship.
